A 57-year-old man tragically lost his life after he was believed to have suffered a heart attack while driving, causing his four-wheel drive vehicle to veer off the road and plunge into a roadside ditch in Kampung Paris 2, Kinabatangan, on Sunday.

The incident unfolded at about 12.30pm as the victim, identified as Salim Duduk, was travelling towards Lahad Datu with his 53-year-old wife. His wife sustained injuries in the crash and was rushed to Hospital Lahad Datu for further treatment.

According to Kinabatangan District Police Chief Superintendent D. Ravi, preliminary investigations revealed that the victim suddenly cried out in pain moments before losing control of the Toyota Hilux. The vehicle subsequently left the roadway and ended up in a nearby ditch. Medical personnel later confirmed the driver’s death at the scene.

Police also revealed that the victim had a known medical history and had previously been receiving treatment for heart-related conditions. His wife informed investigators that he had been battling several health issues prior to the tragic incident. The deceased’s body was later transported to Hospital Lahad Datu for further procedures.

Meanwhile, Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station chief Suriyadi Darwis said firefighters received an emergency call at 1.06pm before dispatching five personnel to the scene, located approximately 50 kilometres from the station. Upon arrival, both occupants had been removed from the vehicle, with the injured passenger later taken to hospital by family members. The operation concluded at 3.15pm after firefighters ensured the area was safe and posed no further danger.

The incident serves as a reminder of how medical emergencies can suddenly occur behind the wheel, highlighting the importance of seeking regular treatment for underlying health conditions and remaining vigilant while travelling.
