A 24-year-old man narrowly escaped death after the car he was driving veered off the road and plunged into a drain near a university area in Kuala Ketil in the early hours of the morning.
The incident occurred around 3am when the victim reportedly lost control of his vehicle while travelling through a poorly lit stretch of road, causing the car to end up in the drain.
The driver managed to get out of the vehicle on his own before being assisted by members of the public, who helped him cross the drain using a small boat.
Baling Fire and Rescue Station chief, Assistant Fire Superintendent Zulkhairi Mat Tanjil, said the department received an emergency call regarding the incident at 3.02am.
He said a team of six firefighters led by Senior Fire Officer II Mohd Najmi Zainol was immediately deployed to the scene.
“Upon arrival, the victim had already managed to exit the vehicle with the help of the public,” he said.
He added that firefighters conducted checks to ensure no other victims were trapped inside the car.
Preliminary information indicated that the victim was travelling from Kulim towards Kuala Ketil before the vehicle skidded into the drain.
