Five areas in Sarawak recorded unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings as of 8am today, with Serian recording the highest reading at 156.

According to the Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), Serian first entered the unhealthy category yesterday, when the monitoring station at the Serian District Police Headquarters recorded a reading of 104 at 5pm.

The other four areas with unhealthy readings this morning were Kuching (154), Sri Aman (152), Samarahan (113) and Mukah (106).

Meanwhile, several other areas recorded moderate air quality, with readings ranging from 63 to 95. They were Limbang, ILP Miri, Miri, Samalaju, Bintulu, Kapit, Sibu and Sarikei.

The API is divided into five categories based on the severity of air pollution.

A reading of 0 to 50 is classified as good, 51 to 100 as moderate, 101 to 200 as unhealthy, 201 to 300 as very unhealthy, while readings above 300 are considered hazardous.
