Five sharia offenders, comprising three women and two men, were subjected to a total of 20 strokes of the cane at the Marang Prison Court in Terengganu on Sunday.
All individuals were sentenced under the category of light caning after pleading guilty to various syariah criminal offences.
The proceedings began at about 10.30am after the offenders arrived at the court at 10.05am, and were completed by around 11am.
Prior to the punishment, all five underwent medical examinations by a government medical officer, with follow-up checks conducted after the caning procedure.
Based on observations, all offenders, dressed in white attire, appeared calm throughout the proceedings, with no untoward incidents reported.
The process was carried out in an orderly manner in accordance with established procedures, involving different caners for each offender and supervised by the relevant prison authorities.
The heaviest sentence involved a 20-year-old female offender who received six strokes of the cane.
Two other offenders, a couple aged 25 and 23, were each sentenced to four strokes after pleading guilty to preparatory acts for extramarital intercourse.
Another couple, aged 26 and 24, received three strokes each for khalwat offences and repeat offences under the Terengganu Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment.
All offenders were also previously given the option of fines or imprisonment in lieu of payment.
They were scheduled to be released on the same day upon completion of their sentences.
