Four Injured After BMW Crashes Into Oil Tanker On Penang Bridge

Date:

Four people were injured after the BMW they were travelling in collided with an oil tanker on the Penang First Bridge heading towards the island shortly after midnight on Thursday.

The accident occurred at KM3.4 of the bridge at around 12.13am, while the 53-year-old tanker driver escaped unharmed.

The crash is believed to have happened after heavy rain hit the state.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations John Sagun Francis said the department received an emergency call before firefighters from the Perai Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene at 12.21am.

“Five people were involved in the accident. The four occupants of the car, aged between their 30s and 40s, had been taken to hospital by members of the public before firefighters arrived,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

The tanker driver, aged 53, did not sustain any injuries.

Firefighters subsequently cleared debris from the accident site to ensure there were no further hazards.

The operation involved 12 personnel from the Perai station, with assistance from the Royal Malaysia Police and highway concessionaire PLUS.

Rescue and clean-up operations were fully completed at 1.11am.
