Five individuals, including four public servants attached to a public pre-university education institution in Perlis, have been remanded for four days to assist in an investigation into alleged bribery involving approximately RM25,000.
The suspects are believed to have accepted bribes in exchange for helping a construction, food supply and maintenance services company secure several government procurement projects at the institution. The contracts are estimated to be worth around RM100,000.
A four-day remand order, effective until July 10, was granted by Magistrate Mohd Amiruldin Roslan at the Kangar Magistrate’s Court following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Wednesday.
According to a source, the suspects comprise three men and two women, all in their 40s. They were arrested between 2pm and 4pm on Tuesday after turning up at the Perlis MACC office to provide statements. The case highlights the authorities’ continued efforts to clamp down on corruption involving public procurement and safeguard the integrity of government institutions.
Initial investigations revealed that the alleged offences were committed between 2023 and 2024. The four public officials are suspected of receiving bribes ranging from about RM2,000 to RM10,000 for each project from the company owner, with a total of 16 projects allegedly awarded through the scheme.
Perlis MACC Director Mohd Nor Adha Ab Gani confirmed the arrests when contacted, adding that the investigation is being carried out under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
He stressed that the MACC remains committed to eliminating the abuse of power and dismantling contractor cartels that monopolise the awarding of government projects, particularly within educational institutions.
