German Tourist Dies After Collapsing During Snorkelling Trip Off Sabah Island

Date:

A holiday excursion in Sabah ended in tragedy after a German tourist reportedly collapsed while snorkelling in waters off Pulau Sakar near Lahad Datu on Wednesday.

The victim, identified as 78-year-old Kenneth Ray Crouse, was later pronounced dead at Hospital Lahad Datu despite efforts to save his life.

According to Lahad Datu Maritime Zone Director Maritime Commander Dzulfikhar Ali, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) received an emergency report regarding the incident at approximately 11.20am.

Following the distress call, a Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) operation was immediately coordinated to transport the tourist for urgent medical treatment. Before authorities arrived, the victim’s companion reportedly administered breathing assistance in an attempt to revive him.

A Cenderawasih 02 patrol boat subsequently transported the unconscious man to the Fisheries Jetty, where he was transferred for further medical attention. However, he was later confirmed dead at Hospital Lahad Datu.

The incident serves as a reminder that recreational activities at sea, while enjoyable, can also carry risks, particularly for elderly travellers and those with underlying health concerns.

Meanwhile, Dzulfikhar urged members of the public to prioritise safety when engaging in marine activities and to seek immediate assistance in the event of emergencies or maritime-related incidents.

Members of the public can contact the Maritime Operations Centre of the Lahad Datu Maritime Zone via WhatsApp at 016-9305727 or call the MERS 999 emergency line for prompt assistance from the authorities.
