The GiatMARA Kuching building at Taman Budaya here was destroyed in a fire late Monday evening.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre received an emergency call at around 11.15pm, prompting firefighters from the Padungan Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) to rush to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the building engulfed in flames, with the fire rapidly consuming the structure.
“Firefighting operations were carried out offensively using two 200-foot hose lines equipped with four nozzles to prevent the flames from spreading further,” a JBPM Sarawak spokesperson said in a statement today.
Firefighters from the Batu Lintang and Tabuan Jaya fire stations also joined the operation, bringing the total number of personnel deployed to 23.
The rescue teams mobilised several assets, including two Fire Rescue Tenders (FRT), two Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) units and a water tanker.
However, the operation was made more challenging due to the absence of a nearby fire hydrant, requiring firefighters to manage the water supply while battling the blaze.
The fire was brought under control at around 12.08am, while the operation was fully concluded at 1.41am.
No injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident. The cause of the fire and the total losses incurred are still being investigated.
