Four people escaped to safety after a helicopter caught fire while undergoing an engine test near Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (LTSAAS) in Subang around noon today.
The incident involved a Kamov Ka-32 helicopter at an aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility within the airport area.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations assistant director Ashrul Riezal Asbar said an emergency call was received at about 12.30pm.
He said five firefighters from the Bukit Jelutong Fire and Rescue Station, together with a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT), arrived at the location four minutes after receiving the call.
“Upon arrival, the operation commander reported that the helicopter was 100 per cent engulfed in flames,” he said in a statement today.
Ashrul Riezal said the fire broke out as the helicopter was preparing to undergo engine testing following repair work.
Despite the intensity of the blaze, all four individuals aboard the helicopter managed to escape safely before firefighters arrived.
Firefighting operations were carried out by the Airport Fire and Rescue Service (AFRS) together with personnel from the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department.
“Firefighters are still carrying out extinguishing operations at the location,” he said.
The incident highlights the risks involved in aircraft testing and maintenance activities, with authorities expected to determine the cause of the fire following further investigation.
