Historic First: Ex-Army Chief And Wife Charged In RM2.1 Million Graft Case

Date:

All eyes will be on the court complex here today as, for the first time in the nation’s history, a former senior army official is expected to be charged with corruption.

Former Army Chief Tan Sri Hafizuddiean Jantan and his second wife, Salwani Anuar, are set to face multiple graft charges for allegedly receiving proceeds from unlawful activities amounting to RM2,122,400 between 2024 and last year.

The couple will be produced separately at two Sessions Courts in Jalan Duta. They are expected to be charged under Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA 2001).

In a statement issued yesterday, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said it had obtained the Attorney-General’s consent to prosecute the couple following investigations into a corruption case involving military procurement tenders.

According to the MACC, Hafizuddiean will also face two additional charges under the same Act at the Shah Alam Corruption Court in Selangor tomorrow.

Salwani, meanwhile, is scheduled to be charged with one additional count under the same Act at the Jertih Sessions Court in Terengganu next Monday.

In a related development, the MACC said it has also obtained consent to prosecute former armed forces chief Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaafar, who is expected to be charged on Friday.
