Indonesian Man Arrested Over Suspected Wildlife Horn Smuggling At Penang Airport

Date:

A 57-year-old Indonesian man was arrested after allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected wildlife products through Penang International Airport (LTAPP) on Thursday.

The man, who had arrived on a China Southern flight from Guangzhou, China, was detained after enforcement officers inspected his luggage.

The Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) said the inspection uncovered 45 items suspected to be animal horns inside the passenger’s baggage.

“The suspected wildlife products were brought in without the required permission or valid documents under Section 68(1)(b) of Act 716,” AKPS said in a statement on Saturday.

The seized items were estimated to be worth around RM5,000 and have since been handed over to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) for further investigation.

AKPS said the seizure reflects its continued efforts to work closely with other enforcement agencies in tackling cross-border crimes, particularly wildlife trafficking at the country’s international entry points.

The agency also stressed that stricter checks and inter-agency cooperation remain important in preventing illegal wildlife products from entering Malaysia through airports and other border gateways.
