Jamal Md Yunos Sells Slipper and Towel for RM66K to Settle Teresa Kok Legal Costs

Date:

Sungai Besar Umno chief Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos has raised funds to pay the remaining RM66,061.85 in legal costs owed to Seputeh MP Teresa Kok by auctioning off a single slipper and a towel.

The two items, used by Jamal during a political demonstration under former Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, were sold to cover the court-ordered costs. Speaking in a Facebook video, Jamal confirmed the auction proceeds would go towards settling Kok’s claim.

“Alhamdulillah, the two items have been successfully auctioned for RM66,000,” he said. “There were two bidders: one from Negri Sembilan bought the towel, and another from Sabah purchased one of my slippers for RM33,000. The slipper buyer plans to frame it and send it to Kok’s office.”

Jamal added that payment to Kok would be made once the auction proceeds were received.

The legal battle stems from a 2017 press conference in which Jamal allegedly made defamatory remarks about the misuse of Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor funds. On July 26, 2022, Judicial Commissioner Datuk Mohd Arief Emran Arifin ordered Jamal to pay Kok RM300,000 in damages and RM50,000 in legal costs. While Jamal paid the damages, the legal costs remained unsettled.

Following delays in payment, Kok obtained a court order for the seizure and sale of assets at Jamal’s residence. Previous attempts to enforce the order, including a visit by court bailiffs on October 9, 2024, were unsuccessful as no one was home.

The case has seen multiple appeals. The Court of Appeal granted Jamal a conditional stay in March 2023, but a subsequent panel upheld the High Court ruling in March 2024. In July 2024, the Federal Court dismissed Jamal’s application for leave to appeal, confirming his liability.
