Kuching Man Jailed Seven Months for Retaining Stolen Vehicle

Date:

The Magistrates’ Court here on Monday sentenced a 40-year-old man to seven months’ imprisonment for retaining a stolen vehicle in an offence committed in September.

Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali convicted Mohamad Yusmadi Osman after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 411 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between six months and five years, as well as a possible fine.

Mohamad Yusmadi committed the offence at a house in Taman Peony, Jalan Matang, at about 5pm on Sept 27.

Based on the case facts, the vehicle owner was informed in August by a worker at an automobile service shop that his car, which had been parked and locked outside the premises, was missing. The loss was estimated at RM8,000.

Closed-circuit television footage from the shop showed three unidentified men stealing the vehicle at about 1.20am.

Police investigations later led to the recovery of the vehicle and the arrest of Mohamad Yusmadi on Sept 27. Checks confirmed that the vehicle’s chassis and registration numbers matched those of the stolen car.

Deputy public prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng prosecuted the case. The accused was not represented by legal counsel.
