A Marine Police Force (PPM) officer was injured in the finger and abdomen after being struck by a gunshot at a marine guard post in Lahad Datu on Tuesday.
The victim, a lance corporal, is currently receiving treatment at hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Lahad Datu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Dzulbaharin Ismail said police had received a report regarding the incident.
He said the officer suffered injuries to the middle finger of his left hand and abdomen after being hit by a gunshot while a colleague was unloading a firearm at the location.
“The victim received initial treatment at Lahad Datu Hospital before being referred to Tawau Hospital for further treatment,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
Dzulbaharin said the officer remains under medical care and is being closely monitored by hospital staff, adding that his condition is currently stable.
The case is being investigated under Section 37 of the Arms Act 1960, concerning the offence of discharging a firearm and causing injury to another person.
Police are continuing their investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. The public have also been advised against making any speculation while investigations are ongoing.
