Lee Biscuits To Shut Pontian Factory By End Of October

Date:

Lee Biscuits Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a biscuit maker with a history dating back to 1934, will stop production at its factory in Pontian, Johor, by the end of October.

The closure is part of a restructuring exercise by its parent group, which is reportedly withdrawing from snack manufacturing to consolidate its assets and focus on core businesses, including rubber and oil palm operations.

Suppliers and customers were reportedly notified of the planned production halt last month, while the factory is also said to be laying off its workers.

Pekan Nanas assemblyman Tan Eng Meng confirmed receiving news of the impending closure when contacted by China Press.

The shutdown will mark the second food manufacturing facility operated by the Lee Group in Johor to close within three years.

In November 2023, the group shut down its Lee Pineapple cannery in Skudai as it shifted its focus towards oil palm cultivation.

Lee Biscuits, also known as Nam Lee, was founded by Lee Kong Chian and is known for products such as Marie biscuits, saltine crackers, banana puffs and iced gem biscuits.

The brand originated in Singapore before its production moved to Tampoi, Johor Baru, in 1955. Operations were subsequently relocated to Pontian in 2005.
