Malaysian Jobseeker Scolded For Asking About Salary: ‘We Work For Free Now, Is It?’

Date:

A Malaysian jobseeker has gone viral after sharing a jaw-dropping interview experience where they were scolded simply for asking about the salary.

Posting on Reddit, the candidate revealed that the interviewer – described as an “auntie” type – gave them a side-eye before allegedly snapping: “Tak kerja lagi tapi dah tanya berapa gaji? Awak datang semata-mata untuk gaji jelah ni?” (“Not even working yet but already asking about the salary? You’re just here for the money, right?”).

Stunned, the jobseeker could only think: isn’t that exactly what a job is for? “Why would I work for you if not for the salary?” they wrote, adding that a previous experience with a fake salary scam had made them more careful this time.

What started as a normal interview quickly spiralled into a lecture about “kids these days” and common sense. The candidate said the interviewer got more aggressive instead of backing down, prompting them to walk away from the opportunity.

Redditors were outraged, with comments like: “Um… yes? I work to get money? Otherwise why would I be here?” and “If they can’t even pretend to be nice during interviews, imagine how terrible they are once you start working.”

Others mocked the unrealistic expectations: “Like yes, it’s always been my dream to become a slave at a 9-5 job because life is so cheap and easy.”

Many encouraged the jobseeker, reminding them that interviews go both ways: “You dodged a bullet. Companies that throw red flags in interviews usually have even worse work culture later.”

Despite the unpleasant encounter, the candidate ended on a hopeful note, praying for a better job soon. And judging from the flood of supportive comments, netizens are rooting for them to find an employer who actually respects its staff.
