A 42-year-old man has claimed trial at the Magistrate’s Court here today on three charges of driving under the influence of drugs, resulting in the deaths of three family members in Hulu Langat two days ago.
Mohd Norazlan Mohd Tamyiz entered a not guilty plea after the charges were read before Magistrate Fatin Dayana Jalil.
The father of two was accused of driving a Perodua Aruz while under the influence of methamphetamine, causing the deaths of Hafifi Rahmat, 34, his wife Nik Aishah Asilah Nik Mohd Zamzuri, 32, and their three-year-old son Muhammad Rafie Hanzal Hafifi.
The incident allegedly took place at Jalan Batu 17, Hulu Langat, at about 7.56am on July 29, 2026.
The accused was charged under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a jail term of between 10 and 15 years as well as a fine ranging from RM50,000 to RM100,000 upon conviction.
Under the same law, he may also be disqualified from obtaining or holding a driving licence for at least 10 years from the date of conviction, with longer disqualification periods for subsequent offences.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Farhanim Abdul Halim did not offer bail for the accused.
However, lawyer S Priyalatha, representing Mohd Norazlan, applied for a minimum bail amount, citing that his client supports his wife, two children and elderly parents.
She told the court that the accused works as a village labourer earning about RM1,000 a month and is the sole breadwinner of his family.
The court later granted bail of RM10,000 for all three charges with one surety, along with an additional condition for the accused to report to a police station on the first day of every month.
The case has been fixed for mention on Sept 18 for the submission of documents and pathology reports.
Previously, it was reported that a family of three, including a three-year-old boy, died after their motorcycle collided with an SUV at Jalan Batu 17, Hulu Langat.
Kajang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said initial investigations found that the Perodua Aruz driven by the accused had allegedly entered the victims’ lane before the collision occurred.
The three victims were thrown from the motorcycle and were pronounced dead at the scene.
