Man Charged With Trafficking 39.9 Litres Of Fentanyl In Perlis

A 65-year-old man has been charged in the Magistrate’s Court with trafficking 39.9 litres of fentanyl at a house in Bukit Keteri, Padang Besar, earlier this month.

The accused, Him Mat, a village worker, nodded to indicate he understood the charge after it was read before Magistrate Ana Rozana Mohd Nor on Tuesday.

According to the charge, Him Mat and another individual who remains at large allegedly trafficked 39.9 litres of fentanyl at a house in Kampung Guar Musang, Bukit Keteri, at approximately 5.50pm on 1 July.

He was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, the accused faces either the death penalty or life imprisonment. Should the court impose a life sentence instead of capital punishment, he is also liable to receive no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Alia Suzila Chek Pi.

The court denied bail and fixed 8 October for the next mention of the case.

Earlier this month, police announced the seizure of vape cartridges believed to contain fentanyl worth an estimated RM34.31 million during a series of raids in Padang Besar and Arau. Several individuals were also arrested to assist with the investigation.
