Man Thrown to Death After Lorry Skids and Crashes on North-South Expressway

Date:

A man was killed after being thrown from a lorry that skidded at Kilometer (KM) 373.9 of the North-South Expressway southbound, here, last night.

The victim, identified as A. Selvam, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical officer from Slim River Hospital.

Muallim District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohd Hasni Mohd Nasir, said the incident occurred at around 8:10 p.m. when a rigid cargo lorry was travelling from Ipoh towards Kuala Lumpur.

According to initial investigations, the lorry lost control before crashing into a road divider and skidding into the middle lane of the highway.

“As a result of the impact, the lorry’s cargo — consisting of PVC pipes — was flung into the opposite lane and struck two motorcyclists traveling from Behrang towards Trolak.

“The collision also caused the front passenger on the left side of the lorry to be thrown out of the vehicle and he was pronounced dead at the scene,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

Mohd Hasni added that the lorry driver and another passenger sustained minor injuries, while the two motorcyclists — aged 37 and 20 — suffered a broken shoulder and injuries to their legs and hands.

“All injured victims were sent to Slim River Hospital for further treatment,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Mohd Hasni said the accident is believed to have occurred when the lorry lost control and skidded on its own.
