Date:

A man with 19 previous drug-related offenses is among seven individuals arrested for allegedly spreading videos and statements containing seditious, threatening, and insulting remarks against national leaders on TikTok and Facebook between September 17 and October 5.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Director, Datuk M Kumar, said investigations were carried out by the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit (USJT), D5 Division, Bukit Aman CID, involving seven different social media accounts.

“These cases include comments and posts containing elements of sedition, insults, and threats toward the government and national leaders. The investigations are being conducted under the Sedition Act 1948, the Penal Code, and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” he said in a statement on Monday.

According to him, all suspects have been remanded for one to three days to assist investigations.

Checks revealed that one suspect in his 40s has 19 prior drug-related records, while another in his 60s was previously investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

Kumar stressed that police will not compromise with individuals who misuse social media to create public unrest, warning the public to act responsibly online to avoid legal action.
