Motorcyclist Crashes After Giant Plastic Sheet Flies Straight In His Face

Date:

A man surnamed Li was recently riding his motorcycle along Taiwan’s Route 74A when a large white plastic sheet suddenly flew toward him, causing him to lose control and crash. Li sustained multiple abrasions and bruises but fortunately escaped serious injury. He later uploaded dashcam footage online, hoping to locate witnesses or other dashcam videos to help clarify who was responsible for the accident. Meanwhile, police are investigating the source of the plastic sheet and have issued fines in accordance with the law.

According to police, the incident occurred around noon on the 20th. Li was riding his motorcycle toward Taichung along the motorcycle lane of Route 74A when a large white plastic sheet unexpectedly blew into his path. He was unable to avoid it, resulting in a crash. Emergency responders conducted an alcohol test, which confirmed he was not under the influence, and Li received medical treatment for his injuries. His motorcycle also sustained significant damage.

Li posted online seeking dashcam footage from anyone who may have witnessed the incident, particularly from trucks or large vehicles that might have dropped the tarp. He emphasized that footage from the area and the surrounding half hour could help clarify what happened. “I saw the sheet shortly after riding onto the road. I couldn’t dodge it and crashed along with my bike,” he wrote, appealing for public assistance.

Footage shows Li riding along the motorcycle lane when a white plastic sheet suddenly appeared in front of him, carried by the wind. Unable to react in time, he crashed.

Police explained that they are reviewing surveillance camera footage to identify the source. Under Taiwan’s Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act (Article 30, Paragraph 1, Clause 2), drivers whose cargo falls off or is improperly secured can be fined between NT$3,000 and NT$18,000 (approximately RM420–RM2,520). The driver responsible for the lost cargo may also face civil liability for damages.
