A motorcyclist was killed after colliding with another rider who was travelling against the flow of traffic while attempting to avoid a roadblock in Kuala Lumpur early Thursday morning.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the accident occurred at Jalan Dewan Bahasa at about 2.30am.
He said initial investigations found that a 21-year-old man riding a Yamaha motorcycle allegedly made a U-turn and rode against traffic after noticing a police roadblock ahead.
“The action caused his motorcycle to collide with another motorcycle, a SYM model, ridden by a 47-year-old man about 50 metres from the roadblock location,” he said in a statement.
Mohd Zamzuri said the impact caused the 47-year-old victim to suffer serious head injuries and he was later pronounced dead while receiving treatment at Hospital Kuala Lumpur.
He said the Yamaha rider had allegedly attempted to avoid the roadblock because the motorcycle he was riding was found to have incomplete accessories.
The suspect’s alcohol test and initial urine screening returned negative results, while he has since been detained to assist investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Mohd Zamzuri reminded all road users to comply with traffic regulations and avoid dangerous actions such as riding against traffic flow to escape inspections by authorities.
