A newborn baby boy was found partially buried alive near a rented house along Jalan Airport in Kapit on Tuesday night, prompting an urgent rescue operation by police.
Kapit police chief DSP Rohana Nanu confirmed that a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) team discovered the crying infant lying face down in the soil at around 11.30pm.
Preliminary information indicated that police had searched the area after receiving a tip-off about the incident.
The baby was reportedly in critical condition when he was found and was immediately rushed to Kapit Hospital for emergency treatment.
He was later transferred to Sibu Hospital for further medical care.
Sources said a female suspect had been identified, but police have yet to record her statement as she is still receiving treatment in hospital.
The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code, which concerns the exposure or abandonment of a child under 12 by a parent or a person responsible for the child’s care.
