A 23-year-old motorcyclist was killed while his friend suffered serious injuries after their motorcycles collided with each other and they were run over by a trailer while attempting to take shelter from the rain beneath a flyover along the North-South Expressway on Thursday.
The incident occurred at Kilometer 96.2 of the expressway, claiming the life of Mohd Khairul A’zami Mohd Nazeri, 23, from Kampung Permatang Kong, Alor Setar. His friend, Muhammad Adib Zamri, also 23 and from the same village, was seriously injured.
Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said police received a call from a member of the public about the accident at around 12.20am.
Preliminary investigations found that both victims were riding Yamaha Y15ZR motorcycles from Alor Setar towards Sungai Petani, travelling along the left lane.
Hanyan said they were believed to have attempted to stop beneath a flyover to shelter from the rain when they encountered another motorcycle that had already stopped there.
While trying to avoid the motorcycle, the two riders allegedly collided with each other before striking the side of a trailer travelling in the same lane.
“Following the collision, both motorcycles fell beneath the middle section of the trailer before being run over and dragged,” he said.
Mohd Khairul A’zami was pronounced dead at the scene, while Muhammad Adib, who sustained serious injuries, was taken to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital (HSAH) for treatment.
The deceased was also taken to the hospital’s Forensic Department for a post-mortem examination.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
