Penang Police Probe Viral Video Alleging Bribery By Officers During Enforcement Check

Date:

Police have launched a comprehensive investigation into a viral video alleging that officers committed bribery while carrying out an enforcement operation in Puncak Erskine, Jalan Fettes, Tanjung Tokong, Penang.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad said police detected the video circulating on social media on November 6, which has since attracted public attention.

He said a police report had also been lodged by the officer implicated in the video to deny allegations of bribery during the inspection.

“The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident shown in the viral video involving the officers concerned.

“The investigation is being carried out under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” he said in a statement on Friday.

Abdul Rozak added that investigators would also examine whether the officers involved had complied with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and disciplinary regulations.

He stressed that police were taking the matter seriously and wanted to establish all the facts surrounding the incident before reaching any conclusions.

The public has been urged not to circulate the video further or make speculative claims that could interfere with the investigation.

“Any witnesses, individuals involved or members of the public with information about the incident are urged to come forward at the Northeast District Police Headquarters to assist with the investigation,” he said.

They may also contact the Northeast District Police Chief’s Office at 04-2181822 or the investigating officer, Inspector Zahiruddin Ismail, at 014-3189026.
