A pillion rider was killed while another man was injured after the motorcycle they were travelling on was involved in a crash along Jalan Sibu Jaya Barat early this morning.
Sibu District Police Chief ACP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said preliminary investigations found that the accident occurred at about 2.15am when the motorcycle, ridden by a man with a passenger on board, was travelling from Sibu Jaya Barat towards Sibu Jaya town.
He said the motorcycle is believed to have lost control upon reaching the location before skidding off to the right side of the road.
“As a result of the crash, the rider sustained injuries to both arms and his left leg and was sent to Sibu Hospital for further treatment,” he said in a statement.
“The pillion rider was confirmed dead at the scene by medical personnel from Sibu Hospital at about 2.48am,” he added.
The victim’s body was later sent to the Forensic Unit of Sibu Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Police have also reminded parents not to allow their children to ride motorcycles without a valid licence, stating that it is an offence under Section 39(1) of the same Act.
He added that offenders may face a fine of up to RM2,000, imprisonment of up to six months, or both if convicted.
