Police are searching for a man believed to be involved in a cable theft case reported near Jalan Takis Hospital in the early hours of Saturday.
Papar District Police Chief Superintendent Heryan Mohd Tahir said police received information regarding the incident from a member of the public at about 2.27am.
He said a witness spotted a suspicious white sedan pulling a cable measuring about six metres in length.
“Two witnesses attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect sped away and fled through several main roads before heading towards the Benoni area.
“The incident did not result in any accident, injuries or damage to public property,” he said.
Following swift action by police, the vehicle believed to have been used by the suspect was later found abandoned along the roadside of Jalan Kampung Buang Sayang.
Initial investigations found that the registered owner of the vehicle had handed it over to a car rental agent before it was rented out to the suspect.
Heryan said police had obtained an image of the suspect and are intensifying efforts to locate the individual to assist investigations.
He added that the cable being transported was believed to belong to a utility or telecommunications company, while the exact location of the theft and the total losses are still being investigated.
The case is being investigated under Section 431A of the Penal Code and Section 235 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Members of the public with information on the suspect’s identity or whereabouts are urged to contact the Papar District Police Headquarters or the nearest police station.
Heryan also called for public cooperation in providing information to help locate the suspect and ensure the individual is brought to justice.
