Police Officer In Court For Allegedly Discharging Firearm Without Cause

Date:

A police officer was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here on Thursday with discharging a firearm without lawful reason earlier this month.

The accused, Mohd Izzat Fitri Mohd Hashim, 37, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Nurul Saqinah Rosli after the charge was read out.

According to the charge sheet, the accused allegedly fired a single round from a black Tara Aerospace TM-9C firearm without valid justification at about 2.30am on September 8 at a food stall along Jalan BPS 2, Bandar Prima Senawang, Senawang.

He was charged under Section 39 of the Firearms Act 1960, punishable under Section 43 of the same Act. If convicted, he faces up to one year’s imprisonment, a fine not exceeding RM2,000, or both.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nik Nur Aqilah Syarfa Nik Zaidi offered bail of RM7,000 with one surety.

The accused’s lawyer informed the court that his client, a police officer earning RM1,700 a month and supporting his elderly parents, is a widower who has cooperated fully with investigators and poses no flight risk. He requested the lowest possible bail.

The court set bail at RM2,500 and fixed February 25 next year for mention.
