Police have recorded statements from two Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel to assist investigations into the case involving a Malaysian pilot who was detained by Indonesian authorities last week over alleged drug smuggling.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the statements from both AVSEC officers were taken yesterday as part of ongoing investigations.
“No arrests have been made so far.
“We recorded statements from the relevant AVSEC personnel to assist with the investigation,” he said when contacted today.
Hussein said police are also examining all available leads, including efforts to identify possible syndicates and drug trafficking networks believed to be linked to the supply of the illegal substances found in the pilot’s possession.
He added that Malaysia would not seek extradition as the suspect would undergo legal proceedings in Indonesia.
Previously, Hussein said investigations found that the 39-year-old suspect was believed to have obtained the drugs from a location in Ampang two days before his flight.
Police are also investigating how the suspect managed to pass through security checks at the airport and are working closely with Indonesian authorities to determine whether the case has links to drug syndicates operating in the country.
Although no arrests have been made in Malaysia, police have identified an individual who is being investigated to assist with the case.
Earlier, Malaysia Airports confirmed that baggage screening procedures at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), including X-ray scanning, are handled by AVSEC and not agencies such as the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) or the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.
The Malaysian pilot was detained on July 28 at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after authorities discovered 15 large packages containing 70,114 ecstasy pills and methamphetamine inside his luggage.
