Sibu Police Nab Three Underage Riders Over Reckless Riding Stunts

Date:

Three teenage motorcycle riders aged between 14 and 16 were detained for allegedly performing dangerous “wheelie” stunts during an anti-street racing operation at Jalan Baru Sibu Jaya on Saturday night.

Sibu District Police Headquarters said in a statement that all three teenagers are being investigated under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous riding. Authorities have repeatedly warned that such behaviour poses serious risks not only to the riders themselves but also to other road users.

In the same operation, police also seized seven motorcycles under Section 60 of the same Act for further investigation and documentation involving various offences. Enforcement actions of this nature are part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal riding culture that has become increasingly concerning in certain areas.

The operation, which ran from 4.30pm to 10.30pm, was conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Sibu District Police Headquarters. It involved three senior officers and 32 personnel from multiple units, including crime prevention and community safety divisions as well as several local police stations under the district.

Throughout the six-hour operation, authorities inspected 30 motorcycles and 35 individuals. Police also issued 84 summonses for a range of offences, including riding without a valid licence, expired road tax and insurance, structural and exhaust modifications, missing number plates, not wearing helmets, worn-out tyres and faulty brakes.

The Sibu District Police stressed the importance of parental supervision, urging guardians to play a more active role in monitoring their children’s movements and ensuring they do not ride motorcycles without a valid licence. They also emphasised that vehicles used must comply with legal specifications and safety regulations.

Police added that proper guidance and supervision from parents are crucial in preventing youths from becoming involved in illegal racing or dangerous riding activities that could endanger themselves and other road users. Enforcement efforts, they said, will continue to be intensified to maintain road safety and public order.
