The mother of 16-year-old Yap Shing Xuen, who was fatally stabbed at a school in Bandar Utama last year, has vowed to continue seeking justice for her daughter following today’s High Court verdict.
In a Facebook post, Wong Lee Ping said she was saddened by the court’s decision, while remembering her daughter as a disciplined, considerate and hardworking child.
“She had only just begun her life.
“She still had so many dreams, so many things she wanted to do, so many places she had never visited and so much of her future she never had the chance to experience,” she wrote.
Wong said her daughter was thoughtful and would save her pocket money and Chinese New Year red packets to buy gifts for her birthday and Mother’s Day.
She also recalled how her daughter would sometimes secretly prepare cakes for her.
Those seemingly ordinary moments, Wong said, had since become some of her most precious memories.
“What a mother finds hardest to let go of is not the expensive gifts her child once gave her.
“It is those ordinary moments that we once took for granted, but which will never happen again,” she said.
Reflecting on the year since her daughter’s death, Wong said she had continued working and carrying on with her daily life, but felt that an important part of her life had been permanently taken away.
“Some pain does not disappear with time.
“We simply learn, little by little, to continue living while carrying that pain with us,” she wrote.
Despite the verdict, Wong said she would not stop pursuing justice for her daughter.
“You will never disappear from my life. From that day onwards, I can only love you in a different way.
“My beloved child, Mum misses you,” she said.
The teenager, now 15, had been charged with murdering Shing Xuen in the girls’ toilet of SMK Bandar Utama Damansara (4), Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, between 9.20am and 9.35am on Oct 14 last year.
The High Court today acquitted him after finding that he was of unsound mind at the time of the incident.
Judge Datuk Adlin Abdul Majid ordered the teenager to be detained and treated at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Perak at the pleasure of the Sultan of Selangor.
