Sultan Ibrahim Launches New Cancer Centre in Honour of Late Son

Date:

An emotional scene unfolded at the launch of the Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Centre and Hospital in Larkin today when His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, was visibly moved to tears while watching a montage dedicated to his late son, Tunku Abdul Jalil Sultan Ibrahim.

The tribute video, screened during the opening ceremony, highlighted cherished moments between Tunku Abdul Jalil, His Majesty, and the Royal family. The occasion marked 10 years since Tunku Abdul Jalil’s passing from stage four liver cancer on December 5, 2015. He was 25.

Located opposite the Sultan Ismail Library, the newly launched cancer centre is equipped with advanced medical technologies including a PET-CT scanner, Linear Accelerator, Cyclotron, Theranostics and gene therapy facilities.

Sultan Ibrahim arrived at 8.57am accompanied by Raja Permaisuri Agong Raja Zarith Sofiah, the Regent of Johor Tunku Mahkota Ismail, and Che’ Puan Mahkota Khaleeda. Several members of the Johor Royal family and Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi were also present.

“I hereby officiate the launch of the Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Centre,” the King declared.

Earlier, centre director Dr William Chong said the facility is committed to delivering high-quality medical care to all communities, with special attention to lower-income groups. He added that the new cyclotron will greatly benefit cancer patients statewide.

Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the opening marks a significant milestone for Johor’s healthcare capability and strengthens its position in medical tourism.

The ceremony concluded with the unveiling of the centre’s official logo and the signing of a commemorative plaque.
