Cable thieves have targeted a secluded telecommunications tower in Kampung Duyoh, making off with critical Maxis infrastructure valued at an estimated RM10,500.
The incident came to light after Maxis’ monitoring system detected service disruptions across several Sacofa-operated towers in the area, prompting a technician to carry out an inspection.
Bau District Police Chief Superintendent Mohd Haide A Rahman said the contractor who arrived at the site found that the perimeter fence had been cut, allowing intruders to gain access before severing and stealing multiple cables.
According to him, the stolen items included about 70 metres of RRU power cable across six runs and 100 metres of CPRI cable across six runs.
He added that the suspects also attempted to cut a 7/8-inch feeder cable, but abandoned it at the scene.
Investigators found the tower is located roughly 500 metres from the main road and another 30 metres uphill within a forested area, making it highly isolated.
The area is described as quiet, with no residents living within a two-kilometre radius, and lacking basic security features such as street lighting and CCTV coverage.
Police said the case is being investigated under Section 431A of the Penal Code and Section 235 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
No arrests have been made so far, and efforts are ongoing to track down those responsible for the theft.
