Teen Suffers 80% Burns, Remains Unconscious After Flagpole Hits Power Line During Procession

Date:

A 16-year-old boy remains unconscious after suffering burns to 80% of his body in an electric shock incident during a religious procession in Mergong, Alor Setar, on Tuesday night.

The school student is receiving treatment at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah (HSB), where two other teenagers injured in the incident are also being treated.

The other victims, both aged 17, suffered burns covering 20% of one victim’s hands and 40% of the other victim’s face and hands.

Both have regained consciousness but remain under hospital observation. One is a school student, while the other works at a motorcycle spare parts and accessories shop.

Kota Setar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Syed Basri Syed Ali said the incident occurred while the teenagers were carrying a flagpole during a tokong sayur procession.

“The flagpole is believed to have come into contact with a main electricity supply line at an estimated height of 10 metres, causing all three to suffer electric shocks,” he said today.

Police officers from the Alor Setar station were dispatched to the scene to conduct checks and take further action, he added.

The incident occurred at about 9pm, with all three teenagers rushed to HSB for treatment.

Kosmo! Online had earlier reported that the boys, aged 16 and 17, were injured after a flag carried during the procession allegedly came into contact with a high-voltage power line.
