A 15-year-old student has been ordered to perform 90 hours of community service within six months after pleading guilty to injuring a 14-year-old junior at a tahfiz prayer hall in Ayer Hitam.
Magistrate Mustaqim Sukarno also ordered the teenager to enter into a three-year good behaviour bond with a RM1,000 surety.
Among the conditions imposed is a curfew requiring the teenager to remain at home from 9pm to 6am. He must also report to the Social Welfare Department every two months throughout the bond period and undergo counselling with his teacher.
The court imposed the orders after considering the teenager’s guilty plea, his plea in mitigation and a recommendation from the Social Welfare Department.
The teenager was charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt to the 14-year-old victim at the tahfiz prayer hall at about 1pm on June 30.
The offence falls under Section 325 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum seven-year jail term and a fine upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, the victim had been assigned to deliver the azan when the teenager mocked his recitation, saying it was not melodious.
The victim became angry and slapped the teenager, prompting him to retaliate. The confrontation then escalated into a pushing match between the two.
The teenager subsequently pushed the victim, causing him to fall and suffer a fractured left wrist.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Shazleen Ibrahim prosecuted the case, while the teenager was represented by lawyer Zurina Sidek.
