Terengganu police have denied allegations of delaying prosecution against a group of Rohingya men suspected of raping a 23-year-old intellectually disabled woman in Kemaman, with the case now stretching into its second month.
Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin said investigators were still working to complete a detailed investigation before submitting the investigation papers for further action.
“We understand that this case has attracted public attention and raised questions among the community.
“However, legal action in every case must be taken based on the findings of the investigation, evidence and instructions from the prosecution,” he said on Wednesday.
Mohd Khairi assured that the investigation papers under Section 376 of the Penal Code would be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office for further instructions.
In a separate development, he said three of the four Rohingya suspects were charged with immigration offences at the Magistrate’s Court on Aug 30.
The three were charged under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. Bail was not permitted, and they are currently being held at an immigration detention depot.
Kosmo! reported on Aug 13 that four Rohingya men aged between 19 and 28 had been arrested to assist investigations into the alleged sexual offence involving the 23-year-old victim.
