A single mother has expressed relief that no one was at home after a car ploughed into the bedroom of her house in Kampung Melayu Pandan, Johor, causing extensive damage.
Rafizah Jonit, 51, said she was at work when the incident happened at around 10am on Monday. She only learned about the crash after a neighbour called to inform her that a car had slammed into the wooden wall of her bedroom.
“Thankfully, my son, my brother and I had already left for work. If it had happened earlier, the outcome could have been very different. Even though the house is badly damaged, I’m grateful my family is safe,” she said.
Rafizah, who works as a clerk, rushed home after receiving the call and found that many belongings inside the bedroom had been damaged in the impact.
According to her, neighbours heard a loud bang while hanging out their laundry before discovering that a Proton Saga had crashed into the house.
She was later informed that the driver, a woman in her 50s, had allegedly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the vehicle to lurch forward and smash into the property.
Rafizah said the family is still unsure whether the driver will cover the cost of repairing the damage, adding that the incident has created significant financial and practical difficulties.
“For now, we’ve covered the damaged section with a canvas sheet. We don’t know how we’re going to afford the repairs. I’m only a clerk, while my 54-year-old brother works as a delivery driver,” she said.
Following the incident, Johor Jaya assemblywoman Chan San San visited Rafizah’s family to assess the damage and offer support.
