Three policemen have been remanded for four days to assist investigations into an alleged extortion case in Pulau Tikus on Aug 6.
The remand order, which runs until Wednesday (Sept 16), was issued by magistrate Siti Nurul Suhaila Baharin against the three suspects, aged between 30 and 48.
The suspects hold the ranks of sergeant, lance corporal and constable. Their remand was sought to facilitate investigations under Section 384 of the Penal Code.
The trio were arrested in separate raids conducted at several locations in the state from Saturday until early Sunday morning.
Their arrests followed a police report lodged by a man who claimed that he and three cousins had gone to Jalan Ladang Hong Seng, Pulau Tikus, to look for a friend’s relative who was allegedly being detained by police.
However, the four men were allegedly detained by individuals who identified themselves as police personnel at about 2.30am.
The complainant claimed they were handcuffed and threatened with being implicated in a Telekom Malaysia cable theft case unless they paid RM20,000.
Fearing for their safety, the four were allegedly forced to withdraw money from an automated teller machine along Jalan Burma.
The complainant claimed they subsequently handed RM13,000 to the suspects in exchange for their release.
