A two-year-old girl was critically injured after being attacked by a pack of stray dogs outside her grandmother’s house in Kampung Tambak, Sungai Kelambu, Peserai, on Saturday.
The incident occurred at about 7am, when Nur Haira Watikah Mohammad Hamizi was attacked by five dogs, leaving her with severe injuries to her head and face.
Her grandmother, Darlinda Darlis, 56, said the toddler had been left in her care while her parents were in Johor Baru for work.
Darlinda said Nur Haira had been lying beside her older siblings and drinking milk while she prepared to take a bath.
“After my bath, I looked for Nur Haira and saw that the front door was open. I went outside and was shocked to see five dogs biting her,” she said when met today.
Her screams alerted her son, who rushed outside to help the child, who was covered in blood.
Darlinda said she and her son immediately took Nur Haira to Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital (HSNI), where she was treated in the red zone and placed in an induced coma.
“I cannot describe how she looked at the time. Her eyes were open, but she could not speak. I cried throughout the journey because I could not bear seeing her in that condition,” she said.
Due to the severity of her injuries, Nur Haira was later transferred to Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) in Johor Baru for further treatment.
Darlinda also claimed that the stray dogs had been abandoned by hunters who used them to hunt wild boar at a nearby oil palm plantation.
“They use these dogs for hunting and leave them here after they are done. We have been worried about the stray dogs for a long time because their numbers keep increasing,” she said.
Batu Pahat district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani confirmed that police had received a report on the incident.
He said the case was being investigated under the Child Act 2001.
