A trailer driver was killed after his vehicle was involved in a devastating six-vehicle collision along the North-South Expressway near Sedenak on Tuesday morning.
The crash occurred at Kilometre 31.9 of the southbound carriageway and involved a trailer carrying iron fencing materials, a Dong Feng container lorry, a Toyota Hilux, a van, a 10-tonne lorry and a one-tonne lorry.
The victim, believed to be a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering severe injuries when the trailer he was driving caught fire.
According to fire authorities, the blaze destroyed approximately 80 per cent of the trailer following the collision.
Kulai Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Senior Fire Officer II Khairil Mohd Adzami said emergency crews were dispatched immediately after receiving a distress call.
A total of 10 firefighters, assisted by two Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) vehicles, an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit and personnel from the Bandar Baru Kulai Fire and Rescue Station, were mobilised to the scene.
Four other individuals involved in the crash escaped without injuries.
However, the drivers of the container lorry and the 10-tonne lorry could not be located when rescue teams arrived and are believed to have left the scene before emergency responders reached the area.
Firefighters launched an intensive firefighting operation using a primary hose line, with water supplied through a relay system from a nearby fire hydrant.
The flames were eventually brought under control before crews secured the area and assisted authorities with recovery efforts.
The victim’s body was later handed over to police for further investigation and identification procedures.
Major accidents involving heavy vehicles continue to pose serious risks on Malaysia’s highways, particularly when collisions result in fires that complicate rescue operations.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the crash, including the sequence of events involving all six vehicles.
The incident caused significant disruption to traffic along the busy expressway as emergency services worked to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow.
