Two Drivers In Fatal Immigration Lorry Crash Expected To Be Charged Today

Date:

The two drivers detained following the fatal crash involving an Immigration Department lorry that claimed the lives of three members of a family at the Maju Junction traffic light intersection are expected to be charged at the Magistrates’ Court today.

A source familiar with the investigation confirmed that both suspects are expected to face charges under the Road Transport Act 1987.

The crash involved an Immigration Department lorry that collided with a Proton Saga before losing control and ploughing into four pedestrians at the Jalan Sultan Ismail intersection at around 1am on Wednesday.

Three members of the same family — a 53-year-old man and his daughters, aged 25 and 12 — died at the scene.

The man’s 55-year-old wife was also struck in the incident. She suffered injuries and was taken to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for further treatment.

The Immigration Department lorry driver, aged 43, and the 50-year-old Proton Saga driver were detained to assist investigations and were each remanded for one day.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said yesterday that the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which concerns causing death through reckless or dangerous driving.

Initial investigations found that the Immigration Department lorry was believed to have entered the junction while the traffic light was red, with its beacon lights and siren activated.

At the same time, the Proton Saga was travelling through the intersection when its traffic light was green before colliding with the lorry.

The impact caused the lorry to lose control and hit the four pedestrians as well as an Inokom Matrix that had stopped at the junction.
