Two Indian nationals suffered serious injuries after becoming trapped beneath a lift that collapsed and fell from the seventh floor of a hotel while repair works were being carried out on Wednesday morning.
Melaka Fire and Rescue Department director Mohd Zaidi Ma’at said the department received an emergency call at 11.55am before dispatching eight firefighters, a fire engine and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle to the scene.
He said the rescue team arrived at the hotel at about noon and discovered that both victims were trapped beneath the fallen lift after it plunged from the seventh floor of the building.
“Firefighters immediately launched a rescue operation and successfully extricated both victims from the wreckage after about an hour of work.
“Both victims, aged 27, were later handed over to Health Ministry personnel before being transported to hospital for further treatment,” he said when contacted on Wednesday.
According to Mohd Zaidi, the rescue operation was fully completed at 1.02pm.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the incident, while the extent of the victims’ injuries remains under investigation.
Further inquiries are being conducted to establish the circumstances that led to the lift collapse during the maintenance works.
