Two Myanmar Men Charged With Murder, Case Delayed As Accused Fail To Understand Bahasa Melayu

Date:

Two Myanmar nationals were brought before the Magistrate’s Court today on charges of murdering a fellow countryman in an incident that took place last month at an open area near Gat Lebuh Macallum.

However, the charges against Myat Thu Khaing and Sein Win Aung could not be read out during the proceedings after it was established that both accused did not understand Bahasa Melayu. This development prompted the court to address the language barrier before moving forward with the case.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Marissa Safina Saiful Adli requested that a new date be set to allow for the appointment of a Myanmar-language interpreter, ensuring that the charges can be clearly communicated to the accused.

Magistrate Tunku Intan Nadiah Tunku Mohammed Nazarin subsequently fixed 23 April as the date for the appointment of the interpreter, highlighting the court’s commitment to due process and fair trial standards.

The case has drawn attention to the challenges faced in handling cases involving foreign nationals, particularly in ensuring proper understanding of legal proceedings. Authorities emphasise that language accessibility is crucial to maintaining justice and transparency.

Earlier reports on 9 March revealed that the victim was found dead near Gat Lebuh Macallum with head injuries believed to have been caused by a blunt object. The body was discovered by police officers from the Jalan Patani station during a crime prevention patrol at approximately 12.05am.

The incident remains under investigation as authorities continue to gather evidence surrounding the circumstances of the alleged murder.
