Two Remanded, Including Security Guard, Over Upside-Down Malaysian And Johor Flags At Kulai Factory

Date:

Police have arrested a Malaysian woman and a Nepalese security guard after the Malaysian and Johor flags were allegedly displayed upside down at a factory in the Indahpura industrial area, Kulai.

Kulai district police chief Assistant Commissioner Tan Seng Lee said the two suspects, aged 34 and 48, were arrested yesterday morning after images of the inverted flags went viral on social media.

Both have been remanded for four days until August 21 to assist investigations under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

The offences cover the improper use of national emblems, behaviour that could provoke a breach of peace, acts likely to cause public alarm and misuse of network facilities. Convictions may result in imprisonment, fines or both.

The Nepalese guard is also being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act for allegedly not having valid travel documents.

Tan said preliminary investigations indicated that the guard was responsible for putting up the flags, while the woman had instructed him to install them.

Photographs of the flags were first shared on Facebook and Threads before spreading widely online. Following the incident, the factory was temporarily shut down.
