Two-Year-Old Killed by Mother After Suffering 37 Injuries Including Abdomen Tear

Date:

A Birmingham mother has been convicted of brutally murdering her two-year-old son, Keanu Williams, whose post-mortem revealed he had suffered horrific abuse.

Keanu was found dead in January 2011 with 37 injuries, including a fractured skull and a fist-sized tear in his abdomen that caused severe blood loss. The toddler had also suffered extensive bruising, with marks suggesting he had been struck with a stick or rod. He lived with his mother, 25-year-old Rebecca Shuttleworth, in Ward End, Birmingham.

Following a five-month trial, Shuttleworth was found guilty of murder and will serve a minimum of 18 years in prison. During sentencing at Birmingham Crown Court, Mr Justice Spencer said: “He was a defenseless child, and it was your duty to protect him. Instead, you beat him so severely he died a lingering death from his injuries. You also failed to summon medical aid he desperately needed.”

On the day of his death, emergency services were called around 7:40 p.m., but Keanu had already collapsed on the sofa. Investigations suggested many of his injuries had been inflicted up to 48 hours earlier, and that he was often left alone to suffer.

Detective Chief Inspector Marsh, speaking outside court, described Shuttleworth as a “monster” and said Keanu endured “the worst case of child abuse I have ever seen.” She criticized the authorities, claiming multiple agencies failed to intervene despite clear warning signs. Jane Held, independent chair of the Birmingham Safeguarding Children Board, also highlighted “totally unacceptable and unnecessary failures” by the agencies involved.

The case has sparked renewed scrutiny on child protection services in Birmingham, with several staff reportedly resigning or losing their jobs in the aftermath.

Keanu’s tragic death serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of child abuse and systemic failures to protect vulnerable children.
