University Student Shocked as E-Hailing Driver Arrested for Drugs Mid-Ride

Date:

A university student from India was left in shock when her e-hailing driver was arrested for drug use while taking her home from a sports event at Bukit Jalil last night.

The woman, in her 20s, said the driver became restless as they approached the Sungai Ramal Toll Plaza. “The driver suddenly began acting worried and suspicious when he realised a roadblock had been set up. He was stuttering and sweating when checked. Later, I was told he had been detained,” she told reporters. She added that this was her first experience of such an incident and had to rebook another e-hailing service to reach her destination.

The 47-year-old driver, a father of two, admitted he had first used drugs in 2021 and had made several attempts to quit. “At first, I only took drugs for fun. A friend gave them to me. My wife knows that I take drugs, and this is my first time getting caught,” he said. He was later detained by officers from the National Anti-Drugs Agency (Nada).

Meanwhile, Selangor Road Transport Department (RTD) director Azrin Borhan said a joint operation screened 45 individuals, finding eight men positive for methamphetamine and cannabis.

The operation also targeted vehicles, with 301 vehicles checked, resulting in 422 notices for 637 offences. These included summonses, prohibition of vehicle use, inspection directives, vehicle detention, and weighing orders. Authorities detected 230 drivers without valid licences, 102 expired vehicle licences, and 98 without insurance coverage.

A total of 16 vehicles — three cars and 13 motorcycles — were seized during the operation.
