Wireman Charged With Parang Attack On Elder Brother In Paya Terubong

Date:

A 62-year-old wireman has been brought before the magistrate’s court here after he was charged with allegedly injuring his elder brother using a parang during an incident in Paya Terubong last week.

The accused, Chan Kin Yean, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Magistrate Tunku Intan Nadiah Tunku Mohammed Nazarin, indicating his denial by shaking his head in court.

According to the charge, Chan is accused of intentionally causing injury to his 65-year-old brother, Chan Kim Seong, by using a 48cm parang, a weapon capable of causing grievous harm.

The incident is said to have taken place at around 3.30pm on June 21 at a hut located within an orchard at Lot 71, Mukim 14, Jalan Paya Terubong.

The charge was framed under Section 324 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A, which allows for enhanced sentencing upon conviction.

Court proceedings revealed that the dispute allegedly stemmed from damaged items at the orchard hut, before the victim was reportedly slashed three times and the accused fled the scene.

Chan was later arrested on the same day at about 6.30pm with assistance from the Penang police Criminal Investigation Department’s K-9 unit after he was found hiding behind a house near the location.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Marissa Safina Saiful Adli requested bail of RM10,000 and also sought a court order preventing the accused from contacting the victim and witnesses.

However, defence lawyer Cheah Eng Soon, representing the National Legal Aid Foundation, appealed for minimal bail, stating that his client is a bachelor and works as a wireman.

The magistrate subsequently set bail at RM7,500 with one surety and ordered the accused not to interfere with the victim or prosecution witnesses.

The court fixed August 17 for mention.
