Woman Killed Her Stepdaughter By Lacing Ice Cream with Rat Poison

Date:

Clara Masinga, 37, has been sentenced to 23 years in prison after being found guilty of poisoning her 11-year-old stepdaughter, Jennifer Gumbi, in KwaMhlushwa, Malelane, South Africa. The attack, carried out on March 21, 2015, involved lacing the girl’s ice cream with rat poison, reportedly to spite the child’s mother.

During the court proceedings at the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court in Mbombela on October 15, Masinga admitted her actions under a Section 105A plea and sentence agreement. After the child consumed the poisoned ice cream, she was found abandoned in a ditch near the Mlumati River. In an attempt to cover her tracks, Masinga also poured boiling water over her own body.

Masinga was arrested shortly after the incident and confessed to the crime in court, acknowledging the actions as “unlawful.” The court ruled that the murder, carried out with clear premeditation, justified a 23-year prison sentence, deviating from the minimum prescribed sentence.

Judge Vukeya condemned the increasing incidence of domestic violence in South Africa, particularly the targeting of women and children. Monica Nyuswa, a regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), praised law enforcement for their efforts and emphasized the NPA’s commitment to prosecuting domestic and gender-based violence cases, reaffirming the immeasurable value of human life.
