Abang Johari Says Sarawak Election Not His Priority, Focus Remains On Helping The People

Date:

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has dismissed speculation over an early dissolution of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN), saying his priority is not the state election but ensuring the people continue to benefit from the state’s rapid development.

Speaking to reporters after attending the ASSAR Dividend Announcement Ceremony for the financial year ended June 30, 2026, at Hikmah Exchange on Tuesday, Abang Johari said his focus remains on improving the welfare of Sarawakians rather than preparing for the polls.

“I’m not thinking about the election right now. I’m thinking about how to provide more benefits for the people so they can share in the prosperity created by our rapid development. That’s my priority, not the election,” he said.

The Premier indicated that discussions about dissolving the state assembly could wait until February, when the current Sarawak DUN term is due to expire.

Abang Johari also brushed aside claims that Barisan Nasional (BN) was pressuring the Sarawak government to dissolve the assembly earlier than scheduled.

“That’s what they say. We in Sarawak will make our own decision,” he said, stressing that the state government would determine the timing based on its own considerations.

The most recent Sarawak state election was held on 18 December 2021, and the state legislative assembly currently comprises 82 seats. Speculation over the timing of the next election has intensified in recent months, but Abang Johari’s latest remarks suggest the government remains focused on governance and development before turning its attention to the polls.
