Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended his sincere appreciation to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian for facilitating the safe transit of a Malaysian oil tanker through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. During a special live televised broadcast on Thursday, the Prime Minister confirmed that coordinated efforts are currently underway to ensure the vessel and its entire crew are released promptly to begin their journey back to Malaysia. This diplomatic breakthrough follows high-level discussions aimed at navigating the increasingly volatile maritime environment in the Middle East.
In addition to his dialogue with the Iranian leadership, Anwar engaged in crucial telecommunications with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to deliberate on the escalating tensions across Western Asia. These discussions marked the third instance of communication with the Pakistani leader as Malaysia seeks a deeper understanding of the measures required to foster peace. The conflict, which intensified following military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran, continues to pose a significant challenge to regional stability and international diplomacy.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the immense difficulty in reaching a peaceful resolution, noting that Iran remains cautious due to feelings of being repeatedly misled in past negotiations. Tehran is reportedly seeking binding agreements and firm security guarantees before committing to further peace initiatives. Anwar further highlighted the devastating humanitarian toll of the ongoing conflict, which has spilled over into Lebanon, displacing over a million people and causing massive destruction of property, while the foundational crisis in Palestine and Gaza remains unresolved and continues to cause immense suffering.
Addressing the economic implications of the regional instability, Anwar noted that blockades in the Strait of Hormuz and disruptions to the global supply of oil and gas have the potential to impact Malaysia significantly. However, he reassured the public that the nation remains in a resilient position thanks to the strategic capabilities of the national energy firm, Petronas, in managing energy supplies and maintaining market stability. Malaysia intends to maintain an active role in supporting regional peace efforts while prioritising the protection of its citizens’ interests and the nation’s economic integrity.
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister reiterated Malaysia’s firm stance against acts of tyranny, oppression, and aggression attributed to Israeli and American forces. He observed that the situation has grown increasingly complex as Iran’s retaliatory actions affect not only Israel but also neighbouring Gulf nations. While expressing gratitude for Malaysia’s continued internal peace and stability, Anwar reminded the nation that it is not entirely immune to the consequences of these global conflicts, given the country’s deep-rooted ties with Iran and Gulf states in trade, investment, education, and culture.
